CESA® -extend

New Multifunctional Masterbatch For Use In Polyester Resins

Clariant Additive Masterbatches has introduced CESA®-extend masterbatches, a series of new multifunctional oligomeric masterbatches for use in the PET family of resins, that can aid in the retention or raising Intrinsic Viscosity (IV) of the resin during processing.

Key attributes of CESA®-extend are:Typical applications include, but not limited to:

- Increased Intrinsic Viscosity- Extrusion of polyester sheet/strapping.
- Improved melt viscosity- Injection blow Molding of polyester bottles
- Increased melt strength- Up-grading of low IV polyester resin, for fiber & recycling applications
- Anti-block effects- Pelletizing undried recycle or scrap
- Low level usage- Foaming of PET sheet or film
- No need for pre-drying- Potential for extrusion blowmolding
- Good clarity
- No by-product generation

CESA®-extend masterbatches contain a multifunctional oligomeric reactant, designed to repair the damage that heat and moisture can cause to polyester resins. CESA®-extend 1597 is used where clarity is not an issue, and 1598 is for use where clarity is critical.

Optimum reactivity of CESA®-extend can be achieved with a recommended use level of between 0.5 and 2.0%, and within a process residence time of 1.5 to 2.0 minutes, depending on predrying, starting IV, end-group ratios, and target melt rheology (see chart below). It may be necessary to increase down stream process temperatures by 10-15oC when using CESA-extend at the higher use levels (> 1.0%). Typically, the feed zone temperatures used in extrusion or injection molding are reduced by 10-15oC to allow for better distribution, prior to any polymer reaction.
